Zero SPAM tolerance

Submitted by George on Thu, 2008-02-28 21:38.
  • General

To state the obvious, if you spam Value Investing News with irrelivant links or business promotions (not stock analysis related) we will ban your account and end your access to the site. This also includes individuals assisting spammers by promoting their submissions.

We have been fairly lucky to have not suffered this problem too much in the past. However, as Value Investing News has grown, some individuals have attempted to abuse this service for excessive self promotion and/or personal profit. This is strictly forbidden. No warnings will be given and your account will be closed and access denied. Advertising options are available if you wish to promote your product or service on Value Investing News.

This notice is being posted as a result of an incident we uncovered today with a controversial self promotional member of VIN promoting someone else's spammy links for a structured settlement service. If you encounter future posts or votes like this, please contact me directly so we can take quick action to end the abuse. Thank you.

Submitted by George on Fri, 2008-02-29 01:10.

I agree that the trading blogs don't belong here. Feel free to vote them down and earn points in the process. Trading blog posts aren't quite spam, since we can poke fun at them with comments, but non-financial market related offers for services are completely considered spam.

If a member want to promote a off topic service or product, they should contact me to make an ad purchase or contribute to all members (those doing revenue share) and make an Adsense purchase. I can even assist you in your purchase. I assume if you are a real investor you can pony up the chump change for the ad.

i agree with alexg, and maybe you could give someone the power to delete irrelevant posts. if thats possible, it might help reduce the spam.

Everyone already has the power to delete posts. Just use the down arrow. A couple of quick down votes by members gets rid of most junk real quick. It only stops being effective when a member starts to promote spam posted by someone else. That's when I have to step in like I did today.

Just get rid of the plus

Submitted by billytickets on Fri, 2008-02-29 00:41.

Just get rid of the plus minus system itself. Most people on these forums havent made any real money so does it matter what the majority thinks? My bargain bins thread was up over 5% ina down market but disappeared because it got enough "negatives" to "kill it". Until the plus minus is done im not submitting anything else

George can delete anything that he feels is spam or inappropraite AS HE SHOULD but ina capitalististic society the "consumer" will decide wat they like A few jealous peopel should not be able to delete someones work by giving it a negative 2 rating.

Disagree with you Billy

Submitted by alexg on Fri, 2008-02-29 00:46.

Disagree with you Billy. Just because someone has not made any 'real" money does not mean their opinions matter less. How can you tell they made any "real" money anyway? The voting system allows users to weed out the good from the great. For example, look at the number of votes the Warren Buffett speech received. Will the system bring down awesome links? Certainly, there have been time where I thought I wrote a killer article only to see it received 1 vote (mine lol). The way i see VIN is as follows, post great links and people will vote it up. Post horrible links and it will be at page 4 in a matter of 3 days. The eprfect example is Silver Slime's links. He continualisly posts some of the best links and thus is rewarded monrthly with Amazon cards, subscriptions, etc At first i was a skeptic of his point total, but after taking a closer look his links constantly get 4 pts+ because they are of high quality. Again, the system works.

Submitted by billytickets on Fri, 2008-02-29 00:58.

well alexg u are entitled to your opinion but EVERY word WEB says is followed BECAUSE OF HIS TRACK RECORD.Do you really think someone who has made 7 figures investing is not respected more than someone who has never made 50,000$?

I respect what EVERYONE says but someone who has actually made money obviously has more credibility

I consider you a very important part of my Investors Brainstorming and enjoy dissent but until you have actually BOUGHT a stock yourself your "opinion" is inconsquential to me anyhow

If someone owns a plane and multi million dollar house and for 5 months has shared EVERY trade with you then you get a good idea.

Lets face facts if you have made 7 figures investing CHANCES ARE you arent lucky

When the plus minus is gone i will return this is my last correspondence about this

If that comment was a shot @ me. I might as well straighten things out.Sorry Buddy, I do OWN stocks. So your whole "arguement" has been dismissed in that statement alone.
As to whether I make them public, is another story. I have stated many times, I own US Bank (and other financials) at a cost bases of $29 and change

Feel free to come back whenever you please, this isn't the first time you say you will stop posting at VIN

Is it OK to submit my blog posts? The last one I submitted is http://www.valueinvestingnews.com/technical-look-dow . If it's not allowed or bothers other members, I will stop doing it. Thanks!

It's okay to submit your blog posts. However, since this is a value investing community, our members aren't interested in technical analysis for the most part. In depth fundamental analysis pieces seem to get the highest rating and get front page attention.

Thanks Nick for fielding this question. I've been busy with the redesign of Value Investing News. It is going very slowly given my limited design skills.
