You may have realized that you will need more than just you and your family to make it through diabetes and the complications it can bring with your health intact and in control of it as much as possible. What you may not know, however, is how many different specialists and forms of professional help you may need. Each of these are extremely important.
Primary Care Physician
Your primary care physician is the one who likely will diagnose you with diabetes and get you started on both your journey to management and refer you to whatever specialist you may need as complications occur. Endocrinologist
An endocrinologist is a specialist who sees patients who need special help with their diabetes management. It is important to remember that most people with type II diabetes do not ever need to see an endocrinologist for their diabetes, while many who have type I diabetes do, mostly because they are likely to be children who will need a lot of help managing it from an early age.
Dietician
Because the treatment for diabetes often includes a good diet, a diabetic diet, your primary care physician will often refer you to a registered dietician to help you control and maintain a healthy weight and diet for your condition. A dietician can be vital to your management of diabetes, as well as vital to your health in general, making them a great part of your health care team.
Diabetes Nurse Practitioner
A diabetes nurse practitioner is a licensed nurse who is trained especially for helping those with diabetes. They are often called nurse educators and can provide several services to someone with diabetes, including tips on diabetic diets, glucose meter usage, and even diabetic recipes. He or she can provide information about how to use your medications, insulin reactions, sick days, how to cope, where to find therapy or help, etc.

There are several other specialists that you may need as someone with diabetes as complications arise. Because diabetes often cause severe trouble with the feet and eyes, a good podiatrist and eye doctor may be needed. It is also common for the need for a therapist or psychiatrist because of how shocking and emotionally strenuous diabetes can be on a person.
