Houston to Obama, Smell the Oil

(via www.crossprofit.com)

The American public needs to be educated about the difference between 'excise tax', 'excess profit tax', and 'windfall profit tax'. The term 'windfall profit tax' is being misused for political reasons.
Is there a case for a true 'windfall profit tax' today?

CCU - Clear Channel Comm: Another Done Deal

(via www.crossprofit.com)

As of 2/13/2008, CCU has inked a deal to sell 60 radio stations. This is the first tangible, non reversible action taken after clearing all regulatory obstacles towards completing the Bain Capital Partners and Thomas H. Lee Partners acquisition. Financing fears (which are non existent as UBS is the 2nd largest shareholder etc.) leaves a 30+% arbitrage opportunity to be realized before July 2008.

CVX - Chevron: It's Time to Buy Abu Dhabi

(via www.crossprofit.com)

The U.S. is selling the goose and then buying back the eggs. The UAE will not allow U.S. firms to buy anything other than eggs. Not so long ago, America was carefull not to sell the goose. Has something changed or are they more clever than ever?

What happened to 'never sell the goose that lays the golden egg'?

DBRN - Dress Barn Inc: The Realities of Two Percent Inflation

(via www.crossprofit.com)

This article is a double-header.

First, the article explains why 2% core inflation feels like a lot more.

Second, specialty retail has some value investing picks. As shoppers look to save but want quality goods, value retailers may fair better than some down market mass retailers. The key to survival is not to kill profits during the downturn.

TRB - Tribune Co: It's a Done Deal

(via www.crossprofit.com)

Several announced acquisitions have seen their stocks trade well below the acquisition price. Deal brokers have transformed into deal breakers. Some of these deals are going to close on schedule no matter how much money the debt holders lose. Here is one stock and why this deal will close before year-end.

Tribune Co: How to Make Money in the Stock Market

(via www.crossprofit.com)

This is like buying a 90 day T-bill that pays 25% interest per quarter! The deal should close within the 90 day period. The company once again reiterated in plain English that this deal is going through.

GM Likes Incentives

(via www.crossprofit.com)

A New York Times article states, Toyota hasn't been doing to well with the Tundra full-size pickup truck. GM and Ford are happy with the news as they feared that Toyota would succeed in invading the truck segment with the same success as the family sedan.

Happy hour isn't here yet according to the article.
