I dont hold Apple because I

I dont hold Apple because I didnt quite get people's zeal for Apple products.. because I never used Mac or iPod.

By the time iPhone rolled around, I thought the stock was running ahead of it self and particularly because of Apple's choice of AT&T, I didn't believe it will go too far too soon.

At this point, I have very different thought on whats coming up..

1. iPhone is ready to go down iPod path.. may be at a slower pace or may be at a faster pace. The pace will be defined by Steve Jobs' ego, Nokia's ability to thwart Apple and Telecom operators fear & greed..
The obvious scenario is that iPhone will grow rapidly.

2. Apple may be fairly valued today but potential iPhone explosion is not priced in.. At this point everyone is talking about 10M iPhones in next 12months.. if Apple decides to play its card slightly differently (more operators, opening the phone for programmers - which is happening, cheaper versions.. etc..) it doesnt take much to grow this number to 20M / 50M or even 100M per year in next three years.. remember the market size is >500M phones a year.

This is what excites people about Apple and will see the stock run up again.. for me, I am ready to pay "good price for great company" and buying some Apple now.

Google/You Tube

Google buying YouTube made perfect sense. The price may have been high, but it was not outrageous by internet standards.

Nice article! I hope the ad

Nice article! I hope the ad gravy train hits MSFT's bottom line in the near future since I own Microsoft shares. However, I don't really like the way Microsoft is drifting away from their operating system and software moat here. It is unlikely they will be able to generate excess profit in the online ad sector for very long if ever given all the competition.

I wish MSFT would instead focus on generating operating systems for the next generation of devices and making those new operating systems so high quality that they end up owning those markets the way they did with the PC. The company needs to focus on its core capabilities, but I'm afraid the current CEO is drifting.

You are welcome alexg. I think much of what Pabrai shares is true. However, I don't think he has really been sticking to his teachings lately. I don't think some of his latest purchases had true sustainable competitive advantages. I think the desire to add small caps to a portfolio can lead one to compromise on the quality of a businesses' competitive advantage. That can lead to positive results in good times, but when industries or sectors are in upheavel, those without true sustainable competitive advantages get crushed.

thanks george for the link. Although im not a big fan of pabrai, the fact that he shares his knowledge with the public is awesome. There are very few individuals with his "status" who share their knowledge with the public and really tries to give the public what they want.

This quote off your Facebook

This quote off your Facebook page seems relevant as well:

"Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks. " -Warren Buffett

Thanks for pointing me to this post on the competition in the search engine wars for an investor's perspective. Looking at the comments, maybe I should also take a look at Ask.com.

Thanks! I didn't expect to find an article on the potential future competitive advantages of Google at an SEO website. I guess it goes to show you that intelligent analysis shines through no matter what field it comes from.

Google $1,000

Not sure it will either. The point of the piece - perhaps somewhat buried in numbers - was that even if Google does everything right and hits the magic $1k you won't make much of a return. The risks on the downside are quite large, we agree.

I can't stomach the fact of Google hitting $1000. I know know if it is the pragmatic bear in me, but the fact the company is already trading at something like 60 times earnings makes my stomach ill.
