Walleys views on Mr.buffett of Berkshire hathaway is good and so is the opinion he has on Dell.but it could have been better if the video has been directly loaded in this site.

That's are great find George. The only issue with Taleb's strategy is that you get a very large payout irregularly and then tread water for several years.. His strategies would not have been as effective in 2004-2007..

Alexg

I agree that many of the net-nets in Japan's small cap space are cigar butts. But some of them trade at absurd discounts to NCAV, I have found one USD7M mkt cap company at a 50% discount to NCAV.

As Francis Chou points out, buying a basket of NCAV stocks ON AVERAGE will work out nicely, much in the same way Buffett bought a basket of bombed out Korean companies after the financial crisis in 1997.

Secondly, it is not low interest rates in Japan that have encouraged growth, restructuring of balance sheets and improving EBIT margins alongside growing demand from initially the USA and nowadays the BRIC nations have been the main driver of growth for the most recent expansion. Most corporates have spent the last 10 years paying down debt not swapping equity for debt.

And swaps markets in Japan are pricing in higher rates driven by cost-push inflation - if you need proof of this look at the yield curve for JGBs since over the past month.

As interesting as Japan's net-net are, they are companies with little or no growth or what Buffett calls cigar butts. For years, Japan has encouraged growth by keeping their rates extremely low.

Japanese filing

Wow, I haven't thought to look through Japanese securities filings to see what global value investors are buying. I don't know Japanese but the Translator under Tools and the VIN Toolbar did a pretty good job of translating some of those pages.

Good link. The video is posted by user "WRTilson", who also posted many videos of Whitney Tilson on Bloomberg. Could the userid belong to W.T. himself?

I'm proud that the company I work for offers DODGX as an investment option in my 401k. In fact 100% of what I put in my 401k finds its way into their capable hands.

Tilson and His Funds

I have to say, if it sounds to good to be true...it probably is, and returns such as Mr. Tilson states for his funds, well, sorry, but I personally don't believe the results.

First of all, I found it curious that stated returns were unaudited. I mean if the returns are all that spectacular, why not hire an independent auditing firm to determine exactly what they were?

The other thing I found curious was that the 2% redemption fees charged when the fund(s) is held less than one year, was not included in performance returns.

Mr. Tilson even tells folks that "the performance quoted above does not reflect the deduction of the redemption fee and if reflected, the redemption fee would reduce the performance quoted."

Yet having slipped that in on page 3, Mr. Tilson continues to market his funds returns as 29.84% and 22.19% for fiscal 2006.

Why not just stop with the games and state performance based on audited results including all fees, expenses, etc.?

I mean no disrespect here, but I have to wonder if Mr. Tilson is really a used car salesman that behind closed doors wears a polyester leisure suit and white patten leather shoes.

Would you buy a car from this person?

Wax

Value Investor Insight

Hi Jason,

I do not subscribe to Value Investor Insight, but that has no bearing on its quality. I am super cheap when it comes to spending money on investment research. I should probably at least try it out in the near future.

I've been considering buying some research products this coming year (I didn't spend any money on research products in '06). Do you or anyone else have any recommendations? I'm especially interested in foreign stock information (especially for ADRs), since that is often the hardest to research.
