Re: "Reverse" Arbitrage

What the margin of safety on doing a "reverse arbitrage" if I were to short the stock if it trades over the buyout price? There is the potential that EDF or another buyer will bid high enough to cause CEG to consider their bid. That would result in a serious loss to a short position.

That said, I could see your "reverse" arbitrage work in other situations.

George, Whats you take on a "reverse" Arbitrage. I.e. Shorting the stock if it perhaps trades over buyout price?

Vote of confidence on solid franchise financials

Regardless of whether the moat of both American Express and Wells Fargo has widened or narrowed, the price has become so attractive for Warren to pass out on this.

At a time when valuations do not matter, Warren Buffett has his vote confidence on franchise financials.

True to his words a two decades ago, "Be fearful when others are greedy; greedy when others are fearful."

I do agree that Buffett tends to buy businesses/stocks that he has previously mentioned in a positive way ( Pritzker family business is one that comes to mind)

Buffett on the mark

Agree with Buffetts comments re inflation threat - the Fed has thin line to tread. Also good to see him dimissing the 'speculation' theories behind the high oil price..

Buffett originally wanted 10 hedge funds

Buffett gave up significant edge when he agreed to 5 hedge funds.

Here's the logic, statistical fluctations accumulate, they do not average out or cancel out as commonly assumed. Therefore, when you have 10 companies facing enormous drag due to fees, that creates a lot of statistical fluctuations. 10 funds times 10 years gives Buffett 100 fund-years of results where the drag from investment fees would work against them. The other party to the trade was smart to get 5 funds meaning it now faces 50 fund years (of performance drag), which is a smaller sample size.

Thanks

Thanks. I agree completely with the idea we may disagree on a few minor points. Also, intrinsic value estimates will vary. I just wanted to write a post following Barron's piece that made it clear getting in at today's price is likely to leave you doing as well or as poorly as Berkshire (the business) does for the period you hold it. The stock is not overpriced the way some mega-caps were around 2000 - where buying into a great business could have left you none the richer five or even seven years later, though the business may have continued to do just fine. My one main point is exactly what you said "BRK/A while not underpriced is not overpriced".

Hi geoff nice article. Like all good chefs we make disagree on a few "minor points" but the general theme is the same that BRK/A while not underpriced is not "overpriced .Check this article out I wrote at the end of July http://www.atfreeforum.com/billyticketswin/viewtopic.php?t=8&sid=d7b8d76add96e7c70fd00fea4fb35c04&mforum=billyticketswin
