Arbitrage is not just for the big boys of Wall Street. My little experiment with my Special Situations Real Money Portfolio is starting look like a success.

I started this portfolio as an experiment to find ways to generate excessive returns even when the market is overvalued based on some old comments made by Warren Buffett regarding his portfolio management in his early years of investing. At first I tried looking at merger arbitrage, but most of these opportunities were not very profitable and seemed to require use of significant margin, which is not cost effective for the individual investor. However, after keep my eyes pealed for opportunities, I soon started to discover several opportunities that were suitable for individual investors.

Have you tried arbitrage or special situation investing? What's been your experience?
