tontine

The returns at Tontine have been strong for a while. They rode the homebuilders for a long time and have made money in E&C lately. But if you check out their 13F, I am sure you can find some ideas. I think they file under Jeff Gendell. Superficially, looks like picking up some financial exposure, some airlines and select tech themes, though I promise nothing of my reading of this.

Be sure not to miss this

Be sure not to miss this last quote in the article:

"He did really well on Autozone,” said Bruce Greenwald, a professor of finance and economics at Columbia University. “Most of his stocks are retail stocks, and he has done really well with them. So he decided he was a genius at retail, and it didn’t occur to him he could be wrong about it. He believed his own press.”

Ouch, that comment by Greenwald has got to hurt.

Although GS will come out a major winner lets not forget that they managed to be only one step ahead. While Wall Street was talking about CDOs they just recognized that it was bad and took it one step further. BRK on the other hand has maintained a level of standard that is unparalleled. I think it goes to show the incredible restraint that Buffet and Co. have.

Now I understand that that I just summarized the entire article but I feel it is worth reiterating again and again and.....

So the question is who actually prepared for this financial drought? I think Goldman Sachs and BRK did. Any other financials?

I've been following John's commentary on Nikko Cordial for a while. I recommend the whole series of posts he's written on it. The situation has become quite interesting.

John's blog, Controlled Greed, is an absolute must read for anyone who holds any of the same stocks he does or is thinking about buying any of the stocks he owns. He follows them so well and writes about them so clearly, he will help any who happens to be of like mind.

He has a unique blog. It excels in this sort of thing. Everyone should check out the portfolio (he presents it right on the site) and if you happen to hold any of the same stocks - or are thinking about any of his stocks - you have to bookmark the site and read every post he writes. It's worth it.

The article is pretty good, but the quote you pulled out is great. It really asks the right question.
