I think the Stock Market

I think the Stock Market Prognosticator did a great job in illustrating why growth in emerging market demand will not likely outpace declines in demand from mature markets.

Look what a day will do. Ambac is got even more problems, and this time it's serious. Moody's is downgrading it. See the new story link for details.

Jean-Marie Eveillard on value investing as risk management

This was a great discussion with Jean-Marie Eveillard on risk, volatility, and how risk can be managed via value investing. He list 3 ways to manage risk as a value investor:

1. Look at specific securities. Examine the strengths and weaknesses of their businesses and maintain a margin of safety.

2. Diversify: Own assets not correlated to equity markets. Eveillard invests in gold.

3. "You got to wait for the fat pitch." Learn to sit on your hands.

The ActionPoint of the day was, "Own something you are uncomfortable wiith." Value investors should definitely have equities in their portfolio that they would be embarrassed to share with their friends and family.

That was a cute article. Made me want to get a drink. ;-)

Thinking of drinks, what's the drink of choice for value investors? My current drink of choice is Tanqueray gin and tonic.

I like to think of it more as style enhancement than style drift. Buffett is constantly adding to his collection of mental models and expanding his circle of competence.

Buffett's "investment style drift" is ongoing

Anyone who read "Poor Charlie's Almanack" knows firsthand about Buffett's investment style drift. The younger Buffett was a "cigar butt" type investor who used a geiger counter to look for opportunities. Even Munger makes it clear i his book that this approach netted Buffett something like $300 million.

It was because Buffett kept adapting his investment style that led to the creation of billions at Berkshire. Even Buffett commented on how he didn't want to overpay based on book value for See's Candy and it turned out to be one of his greatest investments.

Buffett is a better investor today because he is a learning machine and has been able to adapt with the times. The value investment landscape is far more competitive than in the 1970's or 1980's , etc.

What about the environmental impact of pushing coal production?

George,

not linkbait but an honest observation. I have actually been posting on this on the blog for a while now. Between Fox and CNBC, Buffett has almost become a weekly contributor. Having Becky Quick with him on all his trips? Since when has Buffett ever been so visible?

The things of it is, he really does not have anything new to say anymore. It isn't just him, I do not think anyone could given the exposure...

Re: Sick of Buffett Stories?

I don't find his wisdom on investing tiresome but he seems to be succumbing to what I would call "the Nobel Prize winner effect". That is, assuming that after one has achieved great success in one field one has broad competence in things well beyond one's field of expertise.

Re: Sick of Buffett Stories?

I wonder if this story is just some good linkbait by Todd or whether Todd is actually being a contrarian on Buffett. I personally can't get enough of Buffett's wisdom. It's fairly typically to hear a lot from Buffett in May and I actually think I've heard a little less from him this year than I did last year.

Response from Author

It was meant to be humorous as you state. I think generally Value investors are irascible people in life, and it makes some of them bitter to see investors succeed at a strategy that has nothing to it really. Compare the body of "scholarly" work on Value and Growth investing and you can see that Growth has no body of work so to speak.

Also, if you had bought Apple five years ago, it was probably a value stock then.
